The Kids
The children of the TC reflect a diversity of
national, ethnic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. In addition to
Evanston, our children come from to TC from communities such as
Chicago, Skokie, Glenview, Kenilworth, and Wilmette. A number of
children speak languages such as Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean,
French and German in their homes. All of these factors contribute to a
richly diverse learning environment where children are truly
experiencing a microcosm of our world today.
Each year, our children and teachers are engaged in
many interesting projects. Here are a sampling of just a few of these
activities, as described by our teachers.
We have just finished
discovering some of the many wonders of outer space. The children were
full of questions and we let their curiosity lead the way. We
researched information about the planets, stars, rockets, the sun and
aliens. The children built spacecraft and made paper mache planets.
They told space stories and imagined life on the moon and what it would
be like to be an astronaut.
During our multicultural unit
we traveled around the world. We learned that although people may
appear to be very different we are all very much alike. We made a
beautiful rainbow of our skin colors and created self-portraits. We
learned about some cultural differences that make people unique,
special and lots of fun! It was especially yummy to learn about
different foods.
We often do open-ended science experiments. For
our transportation unit, we set up two ramps, a high and a low one and
guessed which one a car would go down the fastest. After charting their
predictions and performing the experiment, we then gave the children
ramps of their own to experiment with. They were curious as to whether
the big cars or the small cars would be the fastest.
Recently, the children worked together to create
a game about sharks. Nearly every child in the class became involved as
an ocean creature or human diver. They climbed in and
out of the "boat" while trying to escape or chase the sharks.
As we finished up our unit on emotions, we created
a class book entitled When Room 26 Gets Angry - Really,
Really Angry. It was a great way for us to think of
appropriate ways of dealing with our feelings.
